Even before the groundbreaking ceremony for the further construction of the S10 was held last Friday, the new park-and-ride or park-and-drive facility in Freistadt was scheduled to open. The second expansion stage of the park in Freistadt Süd is intended to significantly improve mobility for commuters from the region. 237 car parking spaces are now available. In addition, the bicycle parking facility was expanded from 20 to a total of 32 parking spaces. Four additional bicycle boxes will follow in the next few weeks. These make switching to public transport even easier – and the bike is also protected from the weather. The lighting system and video surveillance were also renewed and optimized.
Photovoltaics are being retrofitted
By mid-November, the roofing of the bicycle parking facility will be supplemented with photovoltaic modules. The integration of the photovoltaic system enables the area to be used twice: while vehicles are parked, they can be charged directly at the park-and-ride system. When completed, seven e-charging parking spaces will be available.
Under the coordination of “Schiene Oberösterreich”, a new financing concept for park-and-ride facilities was implemented for the first time: The municipality of Freistadt’s share of the costs, which amounts to 25 percent of the total investment, was borne not only by the local municipality, but also by the surrounding municipalities Rainbach, Leopoldschlag, Windhaag, Grünbach, Sandl, St. Oswald, Lasberg, Waldburg, Hirschbach and Kefermarkt were supported. They provided a total of 238,000 euros for the local transport hub.
According to traffic planners, the approximately 240 parking spaces available will also relieve pressure on the high-level S10 road network. For this reason, Asfinag also made a contribution to the costs. A total of 4.34 million euros were invested in the now completely expanded facility.

“When the wind blows against you, you have to realign the sails to get to your destination. We faced these challenges at the beginning with the Freistadt P&R facility. That’s why I’m even more pleased that we’re now in the final stage of the facility Expansion stage can open,” said the State Councilor for Infrastructure and Mobility Günther Steinkellner (FP) on the occasion of the opening ceremony.
“I am pleased that there are now enough parking spaces available for our commuters. As someone who has commuted to Linz every day for 40 years, I can understand only too well how important it is to park the vehicle without stress. This makes it easier for me Switch to bus or carpool,” added Freistadt Mayor Christian Gratzl (SP).
Infrastructure City Councilor Rainer Widmann (WIFF) referred to the relief for the residents of those settlements whose streets were often blocked by commuter vehicles in the past and thanked the property owners who had made this facility possible.
