Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammadi goes on hunger strike

She sent her family a message about this from the notorious Ewin Prison in the capital Tehran, it said on Monday on her Instagram account, which is run by relatives abroad. “We are concerned about Narges Mohammadi’s physical condition and health,” it said.

Mohammadi, one of Iran’s best-known human rights activists, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this year. According to the Nobel Committee in the Norwegian capital Oslo, she received the prize “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.” The 51-year-old is currently serving a long prison sentence in the notorious Ewin Prison in Tehran.

According to the Instagram post, Mohammadi is protesting against prison conditions with her hunger strike: According to this, sick prisoners should be neglected and not receive the medical treatment they need. At the same time, she is protesting against the compulsory headscarf in the Islamic Republic.
