Nepal was hit by another strong earthquake on Monday. The magnitude 5.6 tremors, like Friday’s tremors, affected the Jajarkot district in the west of the country, according to the Nepal National Center for Seismology website. There were no reports of deaths, injuries or destruction caused by the new quake as of Monday afternoon local time.
According to official information, 157 people were killed in the 6.4 magnitude quake on Friday night. Half of the dead were children, Nepalese media reported on Monday. The quake shook the Jajarkot region a few minutes before midnight and surprised people as they slept.

Meanwhile, relief efforts for those affected have begun. Caritas Nepal wants to build emergency shelters in the earthquake zone and deliver humanitarian aid such as water, food, hygiene products and winter-proof clothing. International Caritas organizations, including Caritas Austria, provide financial support.
The Himalayan state of Nepal is located in a geologically very active region. The Indian continental plate pushes under the Eurasian plate and repeatedly causes earthquakes. Two particularly strong earthquakes of magnitudes 7.8 and 7.3 shook the capital Kathmandu and the surrounding area in 2015. Numerous buildings collapsed, including many of Kathmandu’s historic temples, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
