The expanded council of Conaie met to analyze how to deal with the silence of the Government of Guillermo Lasso, on the request to reduce fuel prices to $ 1.50 for diesel and $ 2.10 for gasoline.
“We have not had any response” (from the Government), he said, and explained that this is why this decision was made yesterday in the expanded council of Conaie, developed in the Amazon town of Unión Base, Pastaza province, bordering Peru.
After almost eight hours of internal discussions, Iza announced that they will not return to the dialogue table with the Executive, because no results have been obtained for the popular sectors.
“In the absence of a response, we ratify the proposal issued to the Government and declare: We will not return to any dialogue process that does not have results,” said the indigenous leader, the AFP news agency reported.
About three weeks ago, Iza met with Lasso, to whom she basically raised the question of abolition of decrees that increase fuel prices.
The government was also required to control the prices of basic necessities and to declare a moratorium on debts acquired with the financial system, which would be affecting peasant and agricultural sectors.
The Executive responded that it will “review” the indigenous proposal, but without specifying when.
In May 2020 the previous government, of the president Lenin Moreno, ordered monthly adjustments to eliminate millionaire subsidies in the face of an economic crisis aggravated by the pandemic.
That policy was upheld by Lasso, when he took office six months ago.
At the end of October, the president decreed an increase in fuels of up to 12%.
The measure sparked protests with marches and road closures by indigenous sectors and workers throughout the country, which left 37 arrested and eight police officers injured.
Iza said that the new protests announced are due “to a lack of response and political will of the national government to establish (a) process of real dialogue with the social sectors of Ecuador.”
The indigenous also demand the cessation of the exploitation of natural resources in the areas where they live, a point on which there is also no agreement with the government.
