The pilot episode of the CBS success first flickered on televisions in the USA on November 3, 1993. The German premiere followed in 1995.
Fran plays in the series Drescher a bridal wear saleswoman from Queens who has been dumped and shown the door by her fiancé Danny Imperiali (Jonathan Penner). She tries her luck as a cosmetics representative on the Upper East Side. By chance she ends up in an interview for a nanny position with a wealthy British man. She gets the job with the widowed and handsome Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy). From now on she is responsible for the three children Maggie (Nicholle Tom), Brighton (Benjamin Salisbury) and Gracie (Madeline Zima).

It’s not just the nanny’s sense of humor that inspires, but also her looks. On Instagram, the page “whatfranwore” (What Fran Wore), with more than 380,000 followers, is dedicated to the nanny’s extravagant and eye-catching outfits – with leopard print, checkerboard design or in the pattern of a brick wall. The dresses were usually not off the rack, but made by well-known luxury brands such as Chanel, Christian Lacroix and Moschino. Which, of course, a normal nanny outside of the sitcom universe could never afford…
