After around a year of political struggle, a McDonald’s branch is now to be built in Schlüßlberg. The project was still considered a failure in January: the ÖVP, FPÖ and the Greens had decreed a new planning area in the local council against the votes of the mayor’s party SPÖ. The central demand: A traffic concept should be developed and the trading park should only be built on multiple floors in the future.
The former should come now, which was also the reason for the municipal ÖVP’s rethinking. In September, the local council gave the green light for the project; the branch will be built on around 5,500 square meters next to the “Floradies” nursery. “The project is now being planned, the company is currently collecting offers,” says Schlüßlberg’s mayor Klaus Höllerl (SP).
He sees the project as an important source of frequency for the trading park. “People can eat there after shopping or one or two of them can still do their errands after they get to McDonald’s,” says Höllerl. There would also be 25 to 30 jobs for Schlüßlberg – and accordingly local tax revenue.
He finds it incomprehensible that the VP has only now given in. “The company was always willing to cooperate when it came to the traffic concept,” says the community leader.
VP Deputy Mayor Alexander Wiesinger-Mayr contradicts this: “The original solution would not have included any traffic concept at all. We see the fact that the project does not now have multiple floors as a compromise.”
Specifically, all companies in the trading park will pay 700,000 euros for the traffic solution – the access road, but also the streets in the park itself, are repeatedly overloaded. The community contributes 10 percent. What the solution will look like exactly is still unclear. “A traffic light on the federal highway and a roundabout are being discussed. However, the exact concept is still being worked out and will then be implemented at the same time as the restaurant is being built,” explains Wiesinger-Mayr. It is not yet clear when exactly both will happen.
