On May 1st, Labor Day, there were two large demonstrations in the eastern Thuringian city of Gera, each with hundreds of participants – one from the right-wing camp and a counter-demonstration from the predominantly left-wing camp. According to earlier information from the police, several criminal complaints were filed at the time – including for incitement to hatred, bodily harm, resistance to law enforcement officers and breach of the peace.
Route changed due to train delay
According to the police at the time, the schedule for the demonstrations was messed up because of a train delay. To prevent the demonstrators from meeting each other, the police changed the route of the counter-demonstration. When an attempt to break through occurred, the police took action and repelled it with batons and pepper spray, among other things. There was later criticism of the approach, and the topic was also discussed in the Interior Committee of the Thuringian state parliament.
A spokesman for the Gera public prosecutor’s office confirmed that the searches are now related to the attempted breakthrough. The focus of the investigation is on the allegation of breach of the peace, but there are other allegations, such as physical attacks on law enforcement officers, resistance to law enforcement officers and bodily harm.
