The government has no information about the young Uruguayan kidnapped by Hamas

Chancellery He assured that he still has no information about the young granddaughter of Uruguayans – kidnapped by the terrorist group Hamas when it attacked the territory of Israel – which was given the Uruguayan citizenship and for which help was also asked Red Cross.

The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Nicolas Albertoni assured in the Parliament that they have had no signs from the Foreign Ministry, although they have been working “since the first day that the Foreign Ministry became aware of this situation.” Albertoni assured that since the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “good offices” were carried out to achieve the release of Shany Goren Horovitz.

Among the actions carried out by the Foreign Ministry are communications with the states of Egypt and Qatar. On the other hand, they communicated with the International Committee of the Red Cross, based in Geneva. The latter, according to Albertoni, has great relevance regarding the possibilities that can generate the release of the young woman.

“This has reached the highest level,” remarked the undersecretary, emphasizing that even “the president has been close to the issue.” In that sense, Albertoni established that the Foreign Ministry has been acting as a bridge between the State and the release request of the woman.

The request to the Red Cross

In mid-October, the Uruguayan government asked the international organization for help, Red Cross, to cooperate in the request for the release of the 29-year-old girl. The young woman has been kidnapped since the 7th of this month when she terrorist organization broke into the Israeli country kidnapping and killing civilians.

Previously, family members went to the government to apply for the woman’s nationality and try to bring her to Uruguay. The case even reached the president Luis Lacalle Pou, who promised to intervene in the situation. With this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented a statement in which it assures that the government granted nationality to Shany Goren considering her a Uruguayan citizen, for which they formally requested her immediate release to Israel.

Uruguay’s abstention at the UN

At the end of October, the General Assembly of the UN approved a non-binding resolution calling for an “immediate and lasting humanitarian truce” amid the war between Israel and Hamas with the abstention of Uruguay.

The initiative, presented by Jordan and which does not name either the terrorist group or the country, had 120 votes in favor, 14 against, among which was USA and 45 abstentions, including the Uruguayan, despite the fact that the granddaughter of a citizen was among the hostages.

Prior to the final vote, the Assembly refused to include an amendment of Canada that asked to expressly condemn Hamas for the attacks of October 7 that caused the death of more than 1,400 Israelis, most of them civilians.

Among the countries of the region, Paraguay and Guatemala against, while Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador and Peru they did it in favor. Among those who abstained, in addition to Uruguay, was Panama and countries like Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, India, Greece, Japan and Sweden.
