Final for LASK in the Europa League: “It’s clear that we have to score”

The knockout phase in the European Football Cup begins for LASK in the fourth group game of the Europa League: against Saint-Gilloise from Belgium they have to do something countable today in order to stay in the race for promotion (6.45 p.m.). Coach Thomas Sageder: “If we want to winter internationally, we have to score points.”

Although: A draw is actually not enough if you don’t want to be dependent on a sensation in Liverpool in three weeks. A win with a two-goal difference would really help because the athletes would then have won the direct duel against Saint-Gilloise in the event of a possible tie on points.

It’s not just Sunday’s performance against Sturm Graz (3:1) that makes the athletes confident: in Brussels they had Saint-Gilloise under control for a long time and led until the 84th minute, but went home without any result after the 1:2. The last minute defeat puts LASK under pressure today. Tobias Lawal interpreted this positively. “It’s an opportunity,” said the neo-team goalkeeper. “We showed that we can beat Saint-Gilloise. If we can do that for 90 minutes, I’m sure we’ll leave the points in Linz.” The reward would probably be another knockout duel in the fight for promotion in the last round against Toulouse on December 14th in Linz. The second place advances to the round of 16, the third place moves to the second round of the Europa Conference League.

Diploma for Sageder

Sageder was represented by his assistants Maximilian Ritscher and Marcel Lücke in preparation for Saint-Gilloise on Monday and Tuesday. The head coach took the coaching diploma with him from the last two days of the UEFA Pro License course. “It started two years ago with an exam and ended with an exam,” says the 40-year-old. “It was a very intense time, I’m glad that everything worked out.” Today his team should pass the European qualification test against Saint-Gilloise.
