He made the comments after a visit to the Rafah border crossing from the Gaza Strip to Egypt on Wednesday. There should be no double standards when describing the situation, said Türk.

About Hamas’ terrorist attacks in southern Israel, Türk said: “The atrocities committed by Palestinian armed groups on October 7 were heinous, brutal and shocking, they were war crimes – as well as the ongoing hostage-taking.” He then said about Israel’s military strikes and the closure of the Gaza Strip, which hinders humanitarian aid: “Israel’s collective punishment of Palestinian civilians is also stopping war crimes as well as the unlawful forced evacuation of civilians.”

The human rights standards are very clear: parties to the conflict are obliged to protect the civilian population and civilian facilities. As an occupying power, Israel must ensure that the people in the Gaza Strip are provided with the essentials. “The actions of one of the parties do not relieve the other party of its obligations under international humanitarian law,” Turk said. Attacks on medical facilities, medical personnel and the wounded and sick are prohibited.

Türk urgently called for a ceasefire. Humanitarian aid must be brought to the Gaza Strip. The hostages who were kidnapped into the Gaza Strip must be released unconditionally immediately. In addition, the political framework must be created to end the occupation of the Gaza Strip on the basis of the right to self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians and legitimate security interests.
