“This tree will be replaced by a younger one” says a white ribbon wrapped around a mighty trunk. Like him, there are other trees around the Lutz furniture store on Goethestraße. The reason is the new headquarters of Raiffeisenlandesbank Oberösterreich, which is taking over the Lutz location while the new furniture store is currently being built on Donaulände next to the FC Blau-Weiß Linz stadium. The general conditions for the major project were decided by the local council in March. “We have worked intensively with RLB representatives to achieve the best for the green space and, above all, the trees. The result is an extensive package of measures,” says the responsible climate councilor Eva Schobesberger, who emphasized in the OÖN interview that the project itself was already fixed when she took over the agenda. “I tried to make the best of it,” says Schobesberger.

47 new trees based on the sponge city principle
Of the 73 trees on the site, 16 will be felled and 20 will be relocated. The rest could be preserved. The RLB has commissioned a tree expert to monitor the entire construction phase. To compensate for the trees that have to be felled, the RLB is planting 47 new ones according to the elaborate sponge city principle, which is intended to provide them with enough living space. The company is also taking part in the tree planting campaign in the Neustadtviertel, where it is sponsoring six trees worth 100,000 euros. “They are taking the whole thing seriously,” says Schobesberger, who speaks of a paradigm shift in terms of tree protection. “A total of around 5,000 square meters will be unsealed and partially greened, and additional new green areas of around 500 square meters will be added to the immediate area,” says the RLB.
Criticism of “tree massacre”
Linzplus parliamentary group leader Lorenz Potocnik sees it completely differently. He discovered the marked trees last week and raised the alarm. He speaks of a “veritable tree massacre.” Since he gives the relocated trees little chance of survival, he speaks of the loss of 30 large, old trees that already have an impact on the city’s climate. “One of the trees has a circumference of over three meters and is probably over 100 years old. “The entire full-grown avenue along Goethestrasse has to give way because a huge underground car park that protrudes into the public area has been approved,” says Potocnik. The replacement plantings could not make up for the losses.
