The Berlin luxury department store KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens) has fallen victim to a cyber attack. A Russian hacker group known as “Play” is said to be behind it, as it became known this week. The KaDeWe Group belongs to the Signa Group led by the Tyrolean owner Rene Benko and his Thai joint venture partner Central Group.
According to the “Berliner Morgenpost”, the attack is said to have occurred on the night of November 2nd to 3rd. Accordingly, the attack could probably have been repelled. Nevertheless, the department store said it took precautionary measures and temporarily switched the KaDeWe Group’s shops and offices to emergency offline operation.
The extent of the attack is still unknown. The department store was able to isolate the affected part of its IT infrastructure, but could not yet make any statement about whether and to what extent data may have been leaked, it said. The company fears that personal data may have fallen into unauthorized hands. A spokesman for the Berlin data protection officer confirmed that the KaDeWe Group filed a corresponding report and informed about the “data protection breach”.
The Russian-based hacker group “Play” is not unknown in the industry. Their victims include the Swiss media company Neue Zürcher Zeitung and a service provider for the Swiss federal administration. The hackers operate a business model that experts call ransomware. They inject encryption software into the IT systems of their targets and thus block access to important data. At the same time, they threaten to publish the data on the Darknet if those affected do not pay a ransom.
