Boric hunts for the apathetic vote

We have to convince many more Chileans who did not go out to vote; there were many who voted for other candidates. We have to be able to welcome them, summon them and incorporate good ideas (wherever they come from), “said the 35-year-old deputy and former student leader, the minimum age to run for the presidency of Chile.

At a press conference in front of the Palacio de La Moneda -the headquarters of the Executive-, Boric affirmed that his project has incorporated ideas from other leftist candidates that did not go to the second round and gave their support to his alliance Approve Dignity, which make up the Broad Front and Communist Party.

The leftist candidate obtained second place in the first round held on November 21, with 25.8% of the votes, behind the Pinochetista Jose Antonio Kast, 55-year-old lawyer, who won with 27.9% of the ballots. The turnout was 47% of the electorate.

Regarding his rival, Boric pointed out that he represents “the same line” as the current government of Sebastián Piñera: “José Antonio Kast is the deepening of the bad government that Sebastián Piñera has had,” he said.

Kast had a campaign event this Monday in Santiago, where he reiterated the need to re-impose “order and security” for Chileans after two turbulent years of demonstrations and a pandemic.

He also publicly presented Paula Daza, the popular former Deputy Secretary of Health of the Piñera government, one of the most visible faces of the handling of the pandemic, who left office over the weekend to join the campaign of the lawyer and former congressman.

According to a projection by the private pollster Cadem released this Monday, Boric would win with 39% of the votes compared to 33% that Kast would obtain. Over the weekend, two other polls returned similar results.

On December 19, 15 million citizens in Chile are called back to the polls to elect the country’s new president, who will replace Piñera and will take office on March 11, 2022.
