Last Friday was a very special school day for the third and fourth grades at VS Pichling. The classroom was quickly relocated to nature with the Good Forest Teaching Island, and around 300 trees were planted by the students (with the help of professionals) in a reforestation area on Schiltenbergstrasse.
Important awareness work
This was provided by district farmer and VP parliamentary group leader Michaela Sommer. She is convinced that the campaign will do important awareness-raising work. A careful approach to nature cannot be learned early enough; there is a need for action, especially in urban areas.
“The children were really enthusiastic, the weather was good,” said Sommer, giving a positive assessment of the planting day, where a forest educator also gave the students interesting facts about hunting and the like. Due to the proximity of the property to the school, the students will be able to visit the young forest in the future – which includes Norway maples and sessile oaks – and see for themselves how long it takes for these to grow vigorously and become shade providers – and at the same time learn how much care and love it takes to maintain a forest.
Name tags for “your” trees
To keep deer away, the children wrapped the young trees with unwashed sheep’s wool, and name tags were also attached so that the children could find “their” trees again later.
“Many people are not aware of how much time nature needs for development, change and growth,” says Sommer, who particularly appreciates the “playful” approach behind the forest-teaching-island initiative.
