Gmunden’s highest culinary delight

At 6,284 kilometers as the crow flies from Gmunden, Ehsan Kalantari is currently out of breath. Not because of the award that he has now received from the municipality of Gmunden for his years of conscientious work on the Traunstein. But rather because he has just set out for the summit of the 7,126 meter high Himlung Himal, on the border between Tibet and Nepal.

The 34-year-old alpinist, whose family was politically persecuted in Iran, fled to Austria in 2015 and has been working at the Gmundner Hütte since the 2019 summer season (you can read a portrait here).

Within a few months he learned German and by his second season on the mountain he was already speaking the dialect.
Kalantari, who is taking a break on the Traunstein next summer, received the award not because of the unprecedentedly successful integration, but for his cooking skills. And he didn’t receive it alone. But hut owner Gerald Auinger, a trained chef and has lived on the Traunstein in the summer for 21 years, does not claim the title of “Best Mountain Hut in Upper Austria”, which was awarded by the industry magazine “Falstaff”, for himself.

As reported, the Alpine Club’s hut was awarded 96 out of 100 possible points in the categories “homemade delicacies”, “panorama”, “ambience”, “service” and “accommodation options”. Auinger and his team came sixth in Austria out of 810 huts. This is not only due to the meticulous and passionate work of Auinger and his wife Sandra, but above all to “the team effort,” as Auinger says. For 19 years, the innkeeper has been able to rely on, among others, Christian Pesendorfer, usually just called “Pesef”, from Altmünster.

Mayor Stefan Krapf (VP) took advantage of the winter break on the mountain and presented part of the Gmundner Hut team on the esplanade with a specially made ceramic “Falstaff” plate. “In recognition of the great work,” he said. From May 2024, Gmunden’s highest culinary delights can be experienced again.
