As an intern, Helena Jordan got a taste of the air of the highest gourmet temple at Per Se in New York. The luxury French restaurant on the southern corner of Central Park has a wine list with more than 2,000 fine wines from all over the world. After years of apprenticeship at the Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico in New York’s Hudson Valley, with Andreas Caminada at SchlossSchauenstein in Switzerland and with the vegetarian chef Paul Ivic at Tian in Vienna, St. Valentine returned to her family in St. during the Corona pandemic Valentin returns with the idea of his own restaurant in mind.

In the meantime, Jordan became interested in wine. She completed her training as a sommelier at the WIFI economic development institute. At Café Capra, however, she made it a point to not only put delicious things on the plates, but also in the glasses. The selection on the wine list, primarily from Austrian winemakers and supplemented by top wines from France and Italy, impressed the anonymous testers from the gourmet guide Gault&Millau. This year they voted the St. Valentine restaurateur at the top of the list of Austrian wine connoisseurs as sommelier of the year.

Jordan was the first woman to leave all male competitors behind in the free skate. “It was just a passion for good wines, for which I want to be an ambassador for the guests here in the country,” says Jordan. She was surprised that this effort was rewarded with the title of being the number one Austrian sommelier this year, but that wasn’t what she was aiming for: “For me, it’s a very pleasing confirmation that I’m continuing on my path.”
