The hearing ended after less than an hour. The actual start of the trial was set for February 1st.
Thunberg had previously arrived at the courthouse in London surrounded by reporters and cameras. At the start of the hearing she gave her name and date of birth. Her lawyer had requested that she not have to give her address in Sweden because of threats.
Thunberg was temporarily arrested in London in mid-October because she and other climate activists were said to have refused to open a street during a protest and instead demonstrated on the sidewalk. Thunberg took part in a protest in London shortly after her arrest.
A dozen demonstrators from Greenpeace and the group Fossil Free London gathered in front of the courthouse on Wednesday. They called for an end to the exploitation of fossil fuels. For example, posters read “Make Polluters Pay.”
Thunberg recently came into discussion because of her position in the Middle East conflict. On Wednesday, the 20-year-old, unlike other defendants and supporters, did not wear a Palestinian scarf around her neck. At a Fridays for Future climate demonstration in Amsterdam, she showed up with a Palestinian scarf and emphasized that the climate movement must support the voices of the oppressed.
Thunberg and Fridays For Future International have positioned themselves on the side of the Palestinians since the start of the recent war between Israel and Hamas. FFF in Austria and Germany, however, distance themselves from this. Fridays For Future Austria had also spoken out clearly against anti-Semitism over two weeks ago following anti-Israel statements on the movement’s international Instagram account. “We as FFF Austria stand united against anti-Semitism and therefore distance ourselves clearly from the posts of this account,” it said in a broadcast. The German branch of FFF had also distanced itself from anti-Israel statements.
