The bill that decriminalize and regulates the euthanasia and assisted suicide is being discussed in the Health Commission of the Senate, and the Minister of Health, Karina Randoassured that the ministry maintains that it is not necessary because there are other laws and regulations that offer a painless death.
The leader was invited to discuss the project that is at the request of the Health Commission of the Senate, after having been approved in the Chamber of Deputies at the beginning of October. There, he assured that there are laws and regulations that meet the objective of the bill, in addition to criticizing some aspects.
“He Ministry of Public Health Its position is that with the regulation and the laws we have today on palliative care, palliative sedation and advance directives, we have the conditions to offer all the people in our country a dignified death without pain and with the support you need,” stated the minister.
In that sense, he said that the position of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) is that the law is not needed because the portfolio has many areas and programs such as Palliative Care and that of Older adults. Along with the minister, experts gave their opinion on the bill, which coincided with Rando’s position.
On the other hand, the leader recalled that it is necessary to take into account that there may be professionals who oppose practicing euthanasia. “It may appear conscientious objection It is something that must be taken into account and the professional who does not want to do it should be authorized not to do it,” he stressed.
Half sanction in Deputies
At the beginning of October the Camera of Deputies of Uruguay approved this Thursday the bill that decriminalizes and regulates euthanasia and the suicide assisted after extensive debate. The project, which merges proposals from the center-right Game Colorado (member of the ruling coalition) and the leftist Forehead Broad (opposition), had the transversal support of deputies from all parties to reach 57 votes out of a total of 96.
The legislation aims to “regulate and guarantee the right of people to go through the dying process with dignity, in the circumstances it determines,” the text says.
The request for euthanasia will be enabled for people of legal age, mentally fit, who suffer “one or more chronic, incurable and irreversible pathologies or health conditions that seriously impair his quality of life, causing him suffering that is unbearable.
During the discussions, however, it was agreed to add that applicants must be transiting the “stage terminal” of the disease, with the sole exception of people with quadriplegia.
All health institutions are obliged to offer the service, but doctors can appeal to the “objection of awareness” to refuse, in which case the assistance center must appoint another professional.
