Athletes who seemingly playfully swing over artificial obstacles, jump from platform to platform and occasionally dare to do a somersault: This is how parkour and freerunners present themselves, especially in cities. At BORG Hagenberg, this is exactly what will be taught in a new sports branch starting next school year. In addition to the communication branch, this sports branch becomes the second focus of the school, which is run as a branch of BORG Linz.
As the first training branch of a school in Austria, the school located in the Hagenberg Software Park is specifically dedicated to trend sports. In the lessons, methods and safety grips for practicing this art of movement indoors and outdoors are trained from the ground up. The students also learn about the essential building blocks that cannot be missing from a health-oriented lifestyle. In addition to increasing your own fitness, the main focus is on correctly mastering the exercises and actively coaching the young people.
Acrobatics and flag football
The trend sports practiced span a very wide range and, in the subject of “Performing Arts”, range, for example, from techniques of partner acrobatics (pyramid, lifting and slinging acrobatics) to different dance styles and juggling. In addition to established sports such as football, volleyball and fistball, the “ball games” class also includes end zone games such as flag football and ultimate frisbee.
“Among our teachers, we have a real expert in trend sports, Martin Friedrich, who has developed the sports branch pedagogically and in terms of content,” says school coordinator Andreas Gärtner. The start was originally planned for the 2025/26 school year. However, after the concept was submitted to the Education Directorate for approval this year, it will start in autumn 2024.
The practical sports matura is taken in the seventh grade. In the eighth grade, students must also complete two instructor training courses. This gives them the ability to plan, teach and evaluate exercise units on selected topics in a club, for example.
Information afternoon
In addition to the other focuses taught at the school, the new trend sport focus is also the focus of the information day that BORG Hagenberg is holding tomorrow, Friday, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Softwarepark Arena and in the school building in Softwarepark 21.
