Russia suffered its deadliest month from Covid-19 in October, before the emergence of the new omicron strain, and was forced to impose a nationwide closure of workplaces for a week in early November.
Cases and deaths are down but remain high. On Tuesday 33,860 new infections and 1,209 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours,
Russia has yet to report cases of the Omicron strain. The country has recorded more than 9.6 million Covid-19 infections since the start of the pandemic and 275,193 deaths.
Putin said the new strain had cast doubt on prospects for global economic recovery and underscored the importance of vaccine recognition and inoculation certificates.
The Russian Sputnik V vaccine has not yet received approval from the World Health Organization (WHO).
