The same marriage project, closer to becoming law in Chile

In addition to admitting the marriage denomination to unions of same-sex couples, the project allows adoption and parentage, because until now the only way for the LGTBIQ + community is the Civil Union Agreement, a form of coexistence.

Isabel Amor, director of Fundación Iguales, one of the main LGTBIQ + organizations in Chile, told Radio Cooperativa her desire to live in a Chile “that wants equality and fraternity.”

“We are talking about a country that cannot eliminate these types of families,” said Amor.

If it becomes law, Chile would be the eighth Latin American country to legalize equal marriage after Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Ecuador, Costa Rica and in several states of Mexico.

If the senators incorporate some changes, the initiative should enter a mixed commission in charge of resolving the differences.

Among the main modifications made by the Chamber, stands out a change in the terminology used by the Civil Code that replaces the words “father” and “mother” with the neutral concept of “parent”, as well as using the term “spouses” instead. of “husband” and “wife”.
