munEl Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) prepares a new measure to encourage internal tourism in Uruguay in the low season months contemplated by the 50% subsidy for hotel rates. The objective is to make the national offer more competitive compared to options in Brazil or, above all, Argentina due to the exchange difference between both countries.
From February or March this new program will begin to operate, which seeks to be a support for the local tourism sector during the low season, months in which it usually depends mostly on the movement of the Uruguayan residents themselves. This was reported by the Minister of Tourism Tabare Viera on the program Who’s Who.
The measure contemplates a 50% subsidy for hotel rates intended for both public and private workers, and Uruguayans who have a monthly income of up to 50,000 pesos will be able to access it.
Each person who uses the benefit will be able to access the program with a companion, and the packages will be available in the hotels that sign up for the new program. Although the details will be known once the plan is finished being designed, Viera said.
“It is to boost internal tourism for Uruguayans, trying to encourage and protect from the impact that comes from Argentina“explained the minister. In that sense, he added that they seek to “support” above all the small hotels.
Measures for retirees and pensioners
This promotion measure would be added to a special program for retirees and pensioners that is in force. It contemplates those who collect liabilities less than 6 nominal BPC—about 33,960 pesos—and consists of a 25% or 40% subsidy included in the value of the tourist package published by the Mintur.
Likewise, recently the Social Security Bank (BPS) and the Municipality of Río Negro They promoted a social tourism agreement for retirees and pensioners, which will allow them to use the facilities of the tourist complex The gray hair.
These actions take place within the framework of the Tourism for All Programinside of the National Social Tourism Systemwhich seeks to “facilitate access to people’s right to enjoy free time and recreation, giving them the possibility of visiting quality tourist places at affordable prices.”
Furthermore, in the current situation it has the double objective of promoting domestic tourism at times when the exchange difference with Argentina It makes the neighboring country much more attractive in economic terms in the eyes of Uruguayans—and more expensive for Uruguay in the eyes of foreign tourists—so it is expected that this year’s tourism balance will end in the red.
