The trombone was the focus of the European Lions Music Competition this year. The young talent prize organized by Johann Neubauer from Nußbach (Kirchdorf district) brought together 16 young trombonists at the Gustav Mahler Private University of Klagenfurt. After the first round, an expert jury nominated the best six participants for the final – including Jonas Gassner from Waldhausen.

Participants from 16 countries

In the final round, Gassner and his fellow competitors had to dedicate themselves, in addition to a selection piece, to the commissioned composition “urolig/rolig” by the Austrian composer Tina Geroldinger. The young Mühlviertler was also able to impress in this second round, so that in the end he achieved second place behind Sophie Rebecca Bright, who had been nominated by the Lions Club Switzerland-Liechtenstein. Third place went to a trombonist from Italy. In addition to the on-site audience, 1,700 people from 27 countries – including Taiwan, Japan and Russia – followed the competition via a specially set up internet live stream. The prizes were presented at a five-course gala dinner at the Lions Europe Forum in Klagenfurt.

22-year-old Jonas Gassner is currently studying at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz in Andreas Eitzinger’s class. In 2016 he received the Josef Ratzenböck scholarship for young musicians. In June 2020, Gassner graduated from the Stiftergymnasium in Linz. His current successes include victory in the Austrian preliminary round for the Lions Music Prize 2023 and winning the audition for a one-year contract as solo trombonist in the Tonkunstler Orchestra.

In addition to his training, the Waldhausen native is musically active in several ensembles: for example the “Kaiser Musikanten” and the “3/4 Musikanten”.
