Carlos Alcaraz is gaining more and more momentum at the ATP Finals in Turin: On Friday, the Spaniard defeated Daniil Medvedev 6:4 and 6:4 in the last group game and thus secured promotion to the semi-finals of the season finale of the best eight tennis players of the year . “I think the most important thing today was that I stayed mentally strong,” said the Spaniard, referring to some critical moments on his own serve in which he remained calm despite the Russian’s pressure. “That was the key to victory,” said the youngest player in the field of eight at 20 years old.

Thanks to the smooth victory over Medvedev, Alcaraz moved past the Russian to the top in the red group and could no longer be pushed out from there before the meaningless evening game between Alex Zverev and Andrei Rublev.

It was therefore clear that in Saturday’s semi-final (9 p.m.) between Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic there would be a duel between the second in the world rankings and the first. “Novak is Novak. He’s the best player in the world right now. He’s only lost six matches this year, he’s incredible,” Alcaraz said of one of the most difficult challenges there is.

In the second semi-final on Saturday (2.30 p.m.) Medvedev will challenge Jannik Sinner, who was still flawless in Turin.
