The choice of password should be carefully thought out.

Even in 2023, “admin” is the most popular password among Austrians. This is the result of a study by NordPass, a provider of a password manager based in Panama and a subsidiary of Nord Security. Every year NordPass examines which passwords are most frequently used worldwide and what regional peculiarities there are.

In Austria, “admin” or number combinations such as “123456” are still among the most frequently used passwords. These passwords are also in the top ten in the global rankings. But there are also regional differences. In Austria, for example, names are often used. “Isabella” and “gerhard13” ended up in the top field. Names from well-known books or films are also very popular. Isildur from “The Lord of the Rings” also makes it into the list of the most popular passwords in this country.

Of course, the results of the study are not a representative list because the experts were only able to analyze those passwords that came from publicly available sources. Nevertheless, conclusions can be drawn from the evaluation and global trends can be read, according to a statement from NordPass. It can be seen that streaming services are particularly careless with passwords – a possible indication that access to streaming accounts is often shared and a simple password is therefore chosen. Users of financial services, on the other hand, are more concerned about choosing a secure password.

Useful alternative: Passkey

NordPass also provides tips on how to increase the security of online accounts. Passwords should therefore be at least 20 characters long and complex and contain uppercase letters, lowercase letters, special characters and numbers. Saving login data in the browser also poses potential risks. Third-party password managers can help.

NordPass sees so-called passkeys as the “future of authentication”. Here, users no longer have to think of a password. Instead, two related keys are created – a public one on the website’s server and a private one on the device. Only those who can confirm that both keys match – through a fingerprint or face scan – can gain access.
