The children were hit by plastic fragments and suffered minor injuries, police reported on Saturday. The 44-year-old, who has a pyrotechnics license, is being investigated for negligent bodily harm, but also against his parents.
The two boys – the ten-year-old was visiting the eleven-year-old – were playing in the garden last Tuesday when they came up with the idea of blowing up the box. The parents were in the house, they knew that their son had received pyrotechnics from his uncle – as he had often done in the past. The fragments of the exploded toolbox hit the children in the body and face. The parents alerted the rescue team and the Red Cross took the boys to the Graz State Hospital for pediatric surgery. It turned out that the injuries were only minor.
The 44-year-old, who is also accused of violating the Pyrotechnics Act, was not very insightful during his questioning, according to the police. Exactly which firecracker it was and where it was obtained from was not yet completely clear. It was probably pyrotechnics without labeling or information within the meaning of the Pyrotechnics Act.
