The “Oranjes” beat Ireland 1-0 in Amsterdam on Saturday and will finish qualifying group B in second place. First place had already been awarded to France, Kylian Mbappe and Co. secured a record victory against Gibraltar with a 14-0 win in Nice. Romania also got European Championship tickets in Pool I thanks to a 2-1 win against Israel and Switzerland, which was enough for a 1-1 draw against Kosovo.
In Group D, Croatia came closer to the European Championship with a 2-0 win against Latvia in Riga. Zlatko Dalic’s team are two points ahead of Wales in second place before the last round. The Welsh moved into a better position with a 1-1 draw in Armenia. The Croatians also still have a chance at first place. This would require a home win against Armenia and a simultaneous defeat by table leaders Turkey, who qualified for the European Championship, in Wales. The Welsh, on the other hand, have to win themselves and hope for a Croatian upset in order to be able to make it to a top two place.
In Amsterdam, the Dutch took advantage of their first chance, Wout Weghorst hit the ball high into the near corner (12′). Due to the home team’s lack of efficiency, the lead remained narrow at the break. Even after the restart, the coolness in the end was missing. A teammate blocked a Xavi shot (48′), Weghorst missed (51′), and Irish goalie Gavin Bazunu was able to fend off a Reijnders shot onto the crossbar (52′).
That almost took revenge. Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made a mistake with Idah’s shot, but the goal was rightly disallowed due to an offside position (59′). Otherwise the Irish were almost exclusively occupied with defensive work, as the ball didn’t find its way into the goal again, but it remained exciting until the end. The Dutch are three points ahead of Greece and, due to the better direct comparison, can no longer be pushed out of second place even in the event of an unexpected defeat at Gibraltar on Tuesday.
Regardless of the result in the home game against the French, the Greeks will finish third. The “Equipe Tricolore” was really in the mood to score with their seventh qualifying victory. An own goal from Ethan Santos (3rd) marked the downfall of Gibraltar. After goals from Marcus Thuram (4th) and Warren Zaire-Emery (16th), it was an exclusion from Santos (18th) that ensured an even clearer superiority. He fouled Zaire-Emery, who at 17 years, eight months and ten days became the youngest debutant in almost 110 years.
Mbappe (30th/penalty, 74th, 82nd), Jonathan Clauss (34th), Kingsley Coman (36th, 65th), Youssouf Fofana (37th), Adrien Rabiot (63rd), Ousmane Dembele (73rd). ) and Olivier Giroud (89th, 91st) made an entry in the history books. France’s previous highest success since 1995 was a 10-0 win against Azerbaijan.
Romania and Switzerland also confirmed their participation in the European Championship
Romania took the lead in Group I. George Puscas (10th) and Ianis Hagi (63rd) were the heroes in the game, which was played in Felcsut in Hungary due to the Gaza War. For the Israelis, Salzburg’s Oscar Gloukh played like he did last time. Switzerland fell back to second place with a 1-1 draw against Kosovo in Basel, but was able to live with it due to their fixed participation in the European Championship.
In Riga, the Croatians set the course for victory early on, largely thanks to the outstanding Lovro Majer. The 25-year-old VfL Wolfsburg midfielder scored in the 7th minute after Ivanusec’s preparatory work and set up Andrej Kramaric’s second goal (16th). After the break, a significantly higher away win would have been possible. The Welsh had to put up with a false start in Yerevan after an early goal from Lucas Zelarayan (5′), but they were unable to do more than equalize with an own goal from Nair Tiknizyan (45’+2).
