The ARBÖ advises leaving the car behind after punching and walking home “in public”. Motorcyclists and cyclists should also not drink punch. Due to the relatively high alcohol content, one punch is enough to exceed the legal alcohol limit.
Motorized vehicle drivers are not the only ones to be careful when punching in Advent. Driving license holders who ride their bikes under the influence of alcohol are also threatened with fines and/or license revocation – not to mention the danger that the drivers create for themselves and other road users. “Even a cup of punch can affect your ability to react, which can have bitter consequences,” says Thomas Harruk, regional manager of the ARBÖ Upper Austria. A fine can still be described as “ending lightly”.
Alcoholic hot drinks such as punch, mulled wine and Jager tea are loyal companions through the cold season, but they are tricky: Due to the cold outside temperatures, punch and the like drink themselves particularly quickly and the actual alcohol content is underestimated. In addition, these drinks usually contain a lot of sugar. The sugar promotes blood circulation in the gastrointestinal mucosa. This means the alcohol is absorbed more quickly by the body.
The average alcohol concentration of punch is around 7.6 percent by volume. Converted, this means that a person with a body weight of 55 kg reaches approx. 0.6 per mille in the blood after just one punch, and therefore already exceeds the legal 0.5 per mille limit.
Fines and driving license revocation
If the 0.5 per mille limit is exceeded, penalties and legal consequences must be expected: between 0.5 and 0.8 per mille, fines of between 300 euros and 3,700 euros are imposed during alcohol controls. In addition, driving under the influence of alcohol is a preliminary offense. From 0.8 per mille, the driver’s license will be taken away for at least one month, the drunk driver will be reported (penalty range 800 euros to 3,700 euros), further driving will be prohibited and traffic coaching will be ordered. Anyone who causes an accident while under the influence of alcohol can also have problems with their insurance: their liability insurance can make recourse claims and their own comprehensive insurance will not pay for the damage. By the way, cycling with a blood alcohol level of 0.8 or more is also associated with significant legal consequences.
The ARBÖ recommends playing it safe and leaving your own car behind, using public transport or calling a taxi instead – this way you can celebrate in a relaxed manner without endangering yourself or others. For everyone who wants to drive themselves: Punch alcohol-free!
