US pop star Taylor Swift “shocked” by fan’s death at concert

“Ana Benevides, who attended The Eras tour concert in Rio last night, has died,” Swift wrote in a post on the online networks on Saturday. “I can’t tell you how shocked I am about this,” she said on Instagram.

According to the health authority in Rio de Janeiro, Benevides died on Friday during Swift’s concert at the Nilton Santos Stadium. The 23-year-old said she felt bad and then suffered a cardiac arrest. Attempts to resuscitate him failed, it said. The authority said it was still too early to say the exact cause of death.

Extremely hot temperatures

The venue in Rio de Janeiro was overheated. As footage circulated online shows, Swift sent helpers to hand out water bottles to thirsty fans. The organizers are now being heavily criticized because concertgoers were not allowed to take water bottles into the concert hall despite the high temperatures.

Large parts of central and southeastern Brazil are currently suffering from an unusually oppressive heat wave. On the day of the concert, the heat index in Rio, which combines air temperature with humidity, had risen to 59 degrees Celsius.

Later on Saturday, Swift spoke up again on Instagram and canceled the concert planned for the evening. Because of the extreme temperatures in Rio, the concert will now be postponed, the singer wrote.

Brazilian Justice Minister Flavio Dion announced that his ministry would take the “necessary measures for access to water” at public events such as concerts. “It is unacceptable that people are suffering, fainting and even dying because they do not have access to water,” Dion said – but pointed out that the cause of Benevides’ death has not yet been officially determined.
