VP: Bernhard Ruf will be his successor in the National Council

In contrast to the SP, the VP has not yet decided on candidacy for the National Council election in a year. The Bad Hall mayor Bernhard Ruf (VP) initially took over the chairmanship of the Steyr-Land district party on Tuesday of the previous week from the National Councilor and Schiedlberg’s mayor Johann Singer (VP) with a whopping 98.6 percent of the delegate votes. The black woodpeckers are already signaling that Ruf will also succeed Singer in parliament, who, born in 1958, is retiring from federal politics. Ruf initially dismisses the fact that no firm decision has yet been made by the state party responsible for compiling the list. But he does not hide his willingness to go to Vienna. In any case, he would not give up the mayor’s office in Bad Hall, “there are still a few projects that I would like to implement,” says the town hall boss, “there are enough examples that both functions are feasible and complement each other.” The party friends have a living example in mind: Johann Singer, who, it is said, wants to remain municipal leader until the mayoral and local council elections in 2027. With Bettina Zopf from Gmunden, the VP has a second regional representative in the House from the Traunviertel constituency. The deluge would have to fall on the VP in the National Council elections in autumn 2024 so that the strong Steyr-Land district would no longer have a parliamentary seat. This means that Ruf can plan his life to commute from the spa town to Vienna to the House of Representatives.

The course has already been set for the SPÖ. The Steyr district will get its seat back in parliament, otherwise the voters would have to sink the Social Democrats into the ground at the polls in autumn. Altmünster Mayor Elisabeth Feichtinger (SP) currently holds the red regional mandate; it is a post of no return. When drawing up the constituency list, her comrades will not forget that she did not give up the parliamentary seat of Markus Vogl (SP), who had moved to Steyr as city leader, as the next in line. The state party would have preferred to see the trade unionist and BMW works council leader Andreas Brich in the vacant seat, but Feichtinger exercised her right to move up. The SP Steyr district party has already put city councilor Katrin Auer (SP) first on its list of candidates; due to the size of the region, she is entitled to the parliamentary seat like a leasehold. Auer can therefore already think about the future. She definitely wants to remain a city councilor for culture in Steyr.
