In the district town there is protest against the city’s plans to cut down six healthy plane trees on Johannesstrasse. The canal there will be renovated next year and the street will also be redesigned, including six new parking spaces. Tree protectors have left notes on the 60-year-old plane trees with the message “Please don’t cut them!” appropriate. Word is now getting around about the planned tree felling and there is a growing lack of understanding among the population about sacrificing old trees in times of climate crisis and increasing heating in cities. “I feel sorry for these trees, they shape the cityscape,” says the Grieskirchen gallery owner and goldsmith Jacinta Mössenböck. In times like these, removing such trees is exactly the wrong thing. “I hope with a bit of will there is another way.”

Mayor Maria Pachner (VP) emphasizes that the decision was not made lightly and was discussed several times in the building committee. “We would have to weigh up whether we do a redesign in which the trees have to be removed, or whether we just renovate the sewer. But even then, no construction company gives a guarantee that the trees will survive that.” The building committee therefore unanimously decided that the street should be redesigned and 14 young trees should also be planted. Since the renovation of the nearby Bahnhofstrasse also resulted in the loss of parking spaces (on the street side of the Prosciutto restaurant), the population was promised that new ones would be built on Johannesstrasse. “You can’t win the debate about trees versus parking spaces,” Pachner is aware. But it certainly won’t be a concrete or asphalt desert. “And we will implement the redesign on Johannesstrasse as beautifully as on Zauneggerstrasse,” says the city manager. She also expects potential protests. We still remember the resistance to the felling of trees on the church square, where grave candles were set up at the time.
Check carefully again
Councilor Bernhard Waldhör from the Greens also sits on the responsible building committee and has approved. “With a heavy heart because at first it was said that the trees could not be saved under any circumstances.” But he has now changed his opinion after discussions with experts. “Before the excavators drive up, it should be carefully checked again whether there is a possibility of preserving the trees,” emphasizes Waldhör.
City councilor and state parliament member Thomas Antlinger (SP), who lives nearby, says: “This is a highly emotional topic and I understand everyone who cares about the trees. But no one can say 100 percent whether the trees will survive.” However, he criticizes the ÖVP’s communication because it was initially said that there was no chance of survival for the plane trees. Antlinger is in favor of the topic being discussed intensively again in the building committee.
