An angel in festive lights and two Steyr brothers at the top of the podium

It was already dark today, Sunday, late in the afternoon and Fritz Steinparz from the LAC Steyr athletics club rolled up the last banners on the promenade with a feeling of satisfaction. Only 250 runners had registered by Tuesday, then in the last few days before the starting signal the largest group of the starting field was added: more than 500 participants, a record. “I don’t know,” says Steinparz, “after Corona, most people don’t register until late.” Never before have so many spectators lined the avenue as the more than 2,000 onlookers at the weekend who cheered on the athletes from the youngest children’s class to the oldest senior class. In the men’s general class, Tobias and Daniel Rattinger from the host LAC Steyr high-fived behind the finish line. Tobias won by more than a minute ahead of his brother with 15:16.8, which was also the best time of the day. Behind him in the overall ranking was Thomas Prüller (HAK Steyr, age group M-40) with a respectable gap of 32.7 seconds. Samuel Leitner (Die Fitmacher, MU-20) took third place, another 2.3 seconds behind.

The fastest woman was Emma Scherb from Mühlviertel from Tripower Wimberger Freistadt with 19:46.6 over the 5200 meter distance, which was also run for men. Bettina Ecker (Starlim Racing Team Wels) and local hero Claudia Fuchshuber from LAC Steyr followed on the podium.

It is customary for athletes to start the Christmas run with a Christmas masquerade. Edith Raml-Barth from Freistadt was honored for her angel outfit with festive lighting made from a five-kilogram battery that she carried along. With the ballast she came twelfth in the W-45 ranking.
