“Around 90 trees will noticeably increase the quality of stay on the main square in the future. Of these, 74 trees will be replanted,” says Deputy Mayor Markus Brandstetter. In Amstetten, twenty silver linden trees were recently planted according to the sponge city principle as a measure against the threat of heat due to climate change. Field maple, gleditschie, antler tree, bird cherry, whitebeam and elm will follow.

The silver linden trees are the smallest trees, the tallest will be Gleditschien with a height of around 25 meters. “All of these will provide shade and more pleasant temperatures in the summer in the future,” says city deputy and environmental officer Dominic Hörlezeder. “Thanks to the sponge city system, rainwater can be absorbed and fed directly to the trees,” explains Brandstetter. During heavy rain, this relieves the pressure on the sewer system and thus prevents flooding. “The south side already gives a good view of what the climate-friendly center will look like in the future,” says Mayor Christian Haberhauer. The city is investing around 69,000 euros in the 74 new trees.

While the paving work along the south side is nearing completion, work is still being done on the sponge city on the north side in the area of the Stadtbrauhof. The work should be finished in time for Advent.

Completion of the new Amstettner main square is planned for the end of 2025. The city is investing a total of around 6 million euros in this.
