Suddenly the police profession is interesting again

Across Austria, 605 people started their training from the beginning of the year to September, and in 2022 there were 278 police officers. This means an increase of 117 percent compared to the previous year. The Interior Ministry even spoke of 120 percent in a broadcast on Monday.

A further 700 police officers will begin their training in December 2023. In Vienna the increase was also quite high: While 865 men and women applied for the admission dates in September and December in September 2022, this year there were 1,261 people – that is an increase of around 45 percent. It’s not just the number of applicants that has increased significantly compared to last year. The numbers show that admissions doubled from 2022 to 2023: In September 2022, 62 police students started their training, and a year later 126 police officers began their training in Vienna.

The measures of the past few months have had an effect, said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP). “This is a good day for security in this city and shows that the police profession is becoming increasingly attractive,” emphasized the Interior Minister.
