The exercise paid off: Together with the Samaritan Association, the Linz mountain rescue team rehearsed exactly the emergency that occurred on Monday evening in the DIESELleitengraben.
A 47-year-old mountain biker had a serious fall in the steep terrain of the Gründberg, near the Klausenweg. The man suffered a fractured femur and was no longer able to get back on his own.
Eleven mountain rescuers from Linz responded and were able to reach the injured man around 5:50 p.m. and had to laboriously transport him towards the road using a mountain stretcher. In “mountain rescue language” this process is referred to as “grinding”. For this purpose, heavy, robust mountain stretchers are used and so-called “Dyneema ropes” are used to secure the structure upwards.
Shortly after 7 p.m., the Samaritan Association was able to pick up the injured man and transport him to a hospital. It was the third deployment around the state capital this year for the Linz mountain rescue service. Just four years ago, such missions were an exception.
