On the night of August 6th, the two Braunauers (23 and 37 years old) were waiting for a taxi on the town square. They were attacked by a group of people for no reason and were beaten several times. The perpetrators then stole a cell phone and other valuables. After the victims lying on the ground screamed loudly for help, the perpetrators initially fled in an unknown direction and consequently into neighboring Germany. Search measures initiated immediately by several police officers were initially unsuccessful. The two victims were injured in the attack and had to be treated in Braunau Hospital.
Information from the population
The perpetrators were searched for weeks and information from the public was evaluated. The officers were able to identify a Syrian citizen living in Germany as the main perpetrator and his 15-year-old brother as an accomplice. A European arrest warrant was obtained by the Ried im Innkreis public prosecutor’s office for the 18-year-old main perpetrator, who was unstable at the time of the crime. On October 10th, the main perpetrator was caught in Lower Bavaria. The Syrian has been in custody since then. On November 7th, the teenager was extradited to the Austrian authorities. He confessed during questioning and was taken to the Ried prison. The Syrian cited “wrong looks” and a lack of respect for his Arab origins as the motive for the crime.
The act was filmed and distributed
During the course of the investigation, several young people were identified who filmed the crime and distributed it on social media. The videos have been backed up. All young people present at the time of the crime will be reported to the Ried public prosecutor’s office for “failure to prevent an act punishable by punishment”.
