During the house search, suspicions of money laundering in connection with an Italian mafia clan were investigated – according to initial findings, it was probably a case of mix-up, Kohlweiß’s lawyer, Gernot Murko, confirmed identical reports from “Kurier” and ” Profile”.

The house search at the behest of the Economic and Corruption Public Prosecutor’s Office (WKStA) took place on October 10th, during which a laptop and a cell phone from Carinthia’s highest-ranking police officers were seized. The investigation revolves around a woman who is said to be involved in mafia business. In a conversation intercepted by the Italian financial police in Naples, she boasted that she had good contacts with the police in Klagenfurt. Specifically, there was talk of a “Capo di Polizia di Klagenfurt”. It was initially unclear how one concluded that Kohlweiss was the case – the name “Michaela” was said to have been mentioned during the conversation.

Sharp criticism of the authorities’ actions

“We don’t know whether that is really the case. To do this you would have to listen to the audio file that has only now been requested by the WKStA,” said Murko. He sharply criticizes the authorities’ actions, saying the allegations have “no basis whatsoever.” “The basis for the massive intervention by the authority is an obviously incomplete and possibly incorrectly translated surveillance protocol.” Instead of confronting his client about it, a house search was immediately ordered: “That is completely disproportionate.”

The woman whose conversation was intercepted then told the Italian authorities that she did not know Kohlweiß. According to media reports, she did say exactly who she meant when she said “Capo di Polizia di Klagenfurt”: namely a man. There was also a search of his house in October, including that of an employee of the State Criminal Police Office.
