He president of the Electoral Court, José Arocenadied this Tuesday after decompensating while he was in full session with ministers of the organization.
Arocena and the ministers were in session when the head of the Electoral Court decompensated due to a heart attack, so they suspended him and requested urgent medical attention, which as soon as he arrived at the scene, tried to revive him without success.
The leader had a doctorate in Sociology and had been in charge of the Electoral Chamber since 2014. Previously, he had been dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication of the Catholic University of Uruguay (UCU) between 1996 and 1998, and academic vice-rector of the same institution between 1998 and 2003, and from 2006 to 2009.
After this, he was director of the Institute of Regional and Local Development Studies at UCU between 2009 and 2012. He was also the author of several books related to his academic discipline.

The vice president of the Republic and current acting president, Beatriz Argimónreferred to the death of Arocena through his X account (formerly Twitter) and assured that he “deeply regrets” his departure.
“An example of work and impartiality. Greetings to his family and friends. May he rest in peace,” wrote the vice president.
For his part, the Minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Pablo Mieresstated on the same social network that he was “Very shocked by the sudden death” of Arocena, whom he defined as “a distinguished academic” and “an exceptional human being” who “died in the full exercise of his powers, working and serving his country, as he always wanted it.
The presidential candidate of Colorado Party (PC) and former president of Antel, Gabriel Gurméndezalso regretted the departure of the leader and noted that he worked “honoring the highest traditions of guarantee, justice, transparency and fairness that for almost 100 years has distinguished this quasi-power of the State.”
José Garchitorena, Minister of the Electoral Courtfired Arocena sending his condolences to his family and friends, and remarked that it was “a pleasure” to share several years of work at his side.
