He is one of the most outstanding writers in contemporary German literature: Navid Kermani, who lives in Cologne. Just a few days ago it was announced that the 56-year-old would receive the Thomas Mann Prize of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts for 2024. According to the jury’s statement, the award was given to him for his narrative and essayistic work, which, with analytical brilliance and compassionate concern, has raised contemporaneity to a level that is unparalleled in contemporary literature.
Next week on Tuesday, November 28th, at 7:30 p.m., Kermani will have the only stop in the whole of Austria at the Altes Theater Steyr as part of his reading tour. It will be his new, powerfully eloquent novel “The alphabet up to S” introduce. The reading, organized by the Literaturschiff initiative in cooperation with the city of Steyr, will be moderated by Kristina Pfoser.

Navid Kermani masterfully connects fundamental questions of our existence about gender, war and transience with the everyday. His book is a unique blend of novel, journal, essay and meditation – a literary celebration that creates its own form.
Kermani, born in Siegen in 1967, lives in Cologne. For his literary and essayistic work he received, among others, the Kleist Prize, the Joseph Breitbach Prize, the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade 2015, the ECF Princess Margriet Award for Culture 2017, the Hölderlin Prize of the City of Bad Homburg 2020 and the Honorary Prize of the Austrian Book Trade 2021.
