Just wait and see? Not in Steyrtal. Operators, supporters and opponents of the planned gas test drilling are eagerly awaiting the nature conservation decision. Meanwhile, the citizens’ initiative Pro Natur Steyrtal is once again mobilizing against the project. On Saturday, November 25th, the demonstration will take place from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The members of the citizens’ initiative want to wake up the people in the region. “ADX plans to drill in the ‘Mittleres Steyrtal’ region. According to documents from the Austrian research funding agency FFG, the information about the alleged deposits is based solely on speculation,” the announcement says. No security of supply and gas shortage – economic self-interest and share profits of a handful of fossil shareholders at the expense of our living space are the real background of these activities, that is the central accusation of the opponents, who appear combative: 50 years ago the population of the Steyrtal was already against crazy power plant project resisted. “At five to 12 we stand in front of the municipal office to show: Drilling for fossil gas? No, thank you! Save the Steyrtal – Molln is just the beginning,” say the organizers of the protest, who recently also spoke about the construction of wells in the area of the drilling site felt provoked by ADX. “The aim here is to create facts.”
“We informed us weeks ago that there would be a well drilled to provide sufficient water supply to the future drilling site,” says a spokesman for ADX Energy. This drilling was carried out not least because of a petition from opponents of the drilling, who “painted the Armageddon of a gas explosion with a mega forest fire in connection with supposedly too little extinguishing water” to the authorities. In general, the most active people would bombard the Upper Austria nature conservation authority with more and more new submissions, which is why there has been a delay that has now lasted months.
