Vandaglas Eckelt recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. The one-man glassworks has become a regionally rooted and globally branched medium-sized company that shapes architecture around the globe with its products.
After the end of the Second World War, the glassworks was expanded into a glass processing company by the descendants of August Eckelt. With the patent “Stainless steel spacers with vapor-tight corners” Josef Eckelt laid the foundation for the industrial production of insulating glass in 1956. In 1970 the company was moved to its current location on Resthofstrasse.
Eckelt was often a pioneer when it came to glass as a material, with Austria’s first plant for laminated safety glass (LSG) being put into operation in 1986.
At the end of 1989, the French Saint Gobain Group took over the Austrian market leader, which repeatedly caused a stir internationally with new technologies, such as facade system solutions. “The driving force behind these innovations has always been our customers. I’m pleased to see today that this path is now being continued,” says Christian Eckelt, who has advanced the company for decades with his technical expertise.
Things have been looking up since 2022
Even if it wasn’t always easy. The economic crisis after 2008 was particularly difficult for the glass specialist. In 2022, the Munich-based Aequita Group brought the Steyr glass refiner on board. Similar companies in Holland, Germany and England had previously been acquired and positioned under the “vandaglas” brand. “We have invested three million euros in the Steyr location since the takeover, with another ten million to follow in the next few years – from new machines to the modernization of the company building,” announced vandaglas managing director Christian Lechner at the anniversary celebration. 100 years after the company was founded, Steyr produces high-tech architectural glass for the whole world. Glass from Steyr can be found, among other things, on the Eiffel Tower in Paris, at Ground Zero in New York and in the Tottenham football stadium. The metropolis of London has always been an important sales market for the glass specialists from Steyr. “The Gherkin” by architect Sir Norman Foster is probably one of the most famous buildings of today.
