This is how the works on the 18 de Julio cycle path in Montevideo are progressing

Cosse announced in mid-September the construction of the bike path, which will have an extension of 3.5 kilometers and will connect the Obelisk with the Independence Square, within the framework of a proposal that also includes the promotion of Greener Montevideo stamp for those businesses that include bicycle racks and favor users who choose to travel this way.

The progress of the works

The controversy

At the end of October, the Professional Association of Architects, Designers and Urban Planners of Uruguay (Apaddu) described the bike path as “dangerous”. Apaddu published a statement on its social networks expressing its “total and absolute disagreement” with the bike path on July 18.

In that sense, they assure that “basic concepts of urban planning and mobility” are being overlooked. First of all, they stressed that he would lose a “symbolic value” of an urban space and what “represents collective memory” since it is the main axis of the capital.
