It’s still a while until the turn of the year, but preparations are already in full swing in Peuerbach: 120 volunteers from the IGLA sports union are supporting the organizing committee around Carsten Eich in organizing this year’s “International Raiffeisen New Year’s Eve Run”. When everything is cleaned up after the race on December 31st, the volunteers will have put 2,500 hours of work into the project. “Without the support of the volunteers, the New Year’s Eve run would definitely not be possible,” says Eich.

The volunteers are currently putting up billboards in 35 communities. Things really start a few days before the race: the IGLA club members take the runners to the hotel in the athlete shuttle and look after them there. In the competition office they prepare the starter bags, check the participant data, accept late entries and prepare prizes and restaurants. The volunteers also help with the organization and implementation of the mayor’s reception and the New Year’s Eve party.

In addition, of course, there is the construction and dismantling of the boards, the stage and the camera platforms along the 850 meter long circuit. The team is diverse: “The oldest helper is 78 years old, the youngest helper is eleven years old. Many take extra vacation to be able to help,” says Marion Gierlinger from the IGLA sports union.

The start is on December 31st at 11:30 a.m. There will be an awards ceremony for each year group shortly after the respective race. The organizers are expecting significantly more than 1,000 participants in the nine competitions this year. If you can’t be there live, you can watch the race of the top runners on ORF Sport+ from 2:15 p.m. to 3:35 p.m.
