The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) pointed this out in a broadcast on Thursday. For women there were around 624,000 preventive examinations and thus around 14 percent of the population.

“Prevention is the key to early detection and combating potential health risks. That’s why it is important that we increase awareness of preventive measures and regular health checks – especially among the male population,” emphasized ÖGK General Director Bernhard Wurzer. Overall, the use of preventive examinations increases with increasing age, with most basic preventive examinations being recorded in the age group between 55 and 59.

The ÖGK recorded around 26.1 million sick days in the previous year. The most common reasons for sick leave among men were diseases of the respiratory system, the musculoskeletal system or connective tissue or injuries, poisoning or other consequences of external causes. Prostate cancer ranks first among the most common cancers. In 2020, 23,373 received Men a cancer diagnosis, of which 6,126 cases were due to malignant tumors of the prostate.

From January 2024, prostate MRI and coronary CT will be an integral part of the ÖGK service catalog throughout Austria. “I am pleased that we were able to integrate these important diagnostic measures for early detection throughout Austria,” explained Wurzer. “Prostate cancer is a real health threat, but it can be detected early and treated effectively through regular examinations,” added ÖGK chief physician Andreas Krauter.
