An unpopular right wing seeks its presidential candidate in France

From 08:00 French time, the members of this formation vote in the first round of their primaries among five candidates, among which the regional presidents stand out. Xavier Bertrand and Valerie Pécresse, and the former European negotiator Michel barnier.

Nevertheless, none would be able to go to the presidential ballot, to which the current liberal president would choose Emmanuel Macron and the far-right leader Marine Le Pen, according to polls. The far right Eric Zemmour I would also have options.

The irruption of the latter, a controversial mediatician, diverted the political debate towards the favorite topics of the extreme right such as immigration, authority or security, omnipresent also during the debates of the primaries of the right-wing formation.

With only 140,000 voters, including 40% of new affiliates, this primary of Los Republicanos, which also has the candidacy of deputy Éric Ciotti and doctor Philippe Juvin, is announced very open.

On Thursday, the applicants who go to the second round will be known. A day later this new vote will begin, which will end on Saturday with the announcement of the winner in the early afternoon, in parallel to the celebration of a party congress.

The winner will join the long list of candidates already declared to the presidential elections in France: Le Pen, Zemmour, the socialist and mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo, the ecologist Yannick Jadot or the leftist Jean-Luc Mélenchon, among others. Macron has not yet confirmed whether he is running for reelection.

This right-wing movement, which had two French presidents from 1995 to 2012 –Jacques Chirac and Nicolas sarkozy-, instead registered a severe setback in 2017, when his then candidate, François Fillon, failed to pass to the second round, immersed in a scandal.

The Republicans also face strong competition from their more right wing, with Zemmour’s postulates, and also from their more center-right wing, with several of their members having joined the ranks of Macron in the past.
