It is still unclear why the 48-year-old from the Braunau district did not notice the train approaching. The driver was traveling on the L1056 Weikerdinger Landesstraße towards Weng on Thursday around 2:15 p.m. in the town of St. Georgen an der Mattig, Burgkirchen municipality. At a level crossing with no barriers, he may have already missed the red light and then the approaching train. The driver drove over the railway crossing at a constant pace. The regional train with 18 passengers coming from the right was unable to stop in time despite emergency braking by the 44-year-old train driver. There was a collision in which the car was thrown into the red light opposite and a memorial stone to a victim standing there.
The Red Cross and fire brigade got the seriously injured man out of the car. After initial treatment, he was taken to Braunau Hospital.
