Five people died after eating products contaminated with listeria from a now closed cheese factory in Gloggnitz, and three became seriously ill. Yesterday the ex-company manager (39), a native of Serbia, had to answer for grossly negligent homicide and grossly negligent bodily harm.
The company also produced Kajmak, a dairy product popular in the Balkans and Turkey. The Gloggnitzer Kajmak was offered in restaurants, among other places. The accused referred to the alleged joint responsibility of those restaurants. Kajmak was “served regularly” despite the expiry of the best-before date.
One of the victims, a 33-year-old, described how she felt sick and dizzy after eating Kajmak in a Viennese restaurant. Twelve days later, she had a premature birth due to Listeria, her daughter had to be given artificial ventilation and stayed in the hospital for weeks.
The defendant is said to have disregarded hygiene regulations, failed to correct defects ordered by the food inspector and failed to maintain equipment.
Witnesses report mold, vermin and dead rats in the production and storage rooms. Listeria had already been detected in the cheese factory’s drain in 2018. In 2019 this test was positive again. But there was “nothing detectable” in the products themselves at the time, said a food inspector.
The trial will continue in January.
