As the Austrian Federal Forests (ÖBf) announced in a press release on Thursday, this animal species is considered extinct in Austria, but is regaining habitats in natural forests. This is also the case in a federal forestry district in Hermagor near Lake Presseger. The ÖBf has been committed to local wild animals via the “Wildcat Platform” since 2009, the report said.
“The pictures are the best proof that natural and sustainable management of forests and the promotion of biodiversity and species protection go hand in hand,” said Antje Güttler, ÖBf operations manager for Carinthia-Lungau, delighted with the wildcat’s return. The shy and solitary wildcat places high demands on its habitat and would find enough space in the structurally rich, extensive forests.
