Around 253,000 deaths in the EU in 2021 were related to fine dust levels above the recommended limits of the World Health Organization (WHO), the EEA announced yesterday at the EU’s “Clean Air Forum” in Rotterdam. According to the EEA, there were around 3,200 deaths for Austria. Austria is therefore in the middle of the EU: According to the EEA, the highest absolute numbers of attributable deaths were measured in Poland, Italy and Germany, and the lowest in the north and north-west of Europe.

“The impact of air pollution on our health is still too high,” said EEA Director Leena Ylä-Mononen. According to estimates, particulate matter causes the greatest health burden through heart disease, followed by strokes, diabetes, the lung disease COPD, lung cancer and asthma.

Millions in fines for France

The country’s State Council, as the highest administrative court, has sentenced France to a fine of ten million euros for excessive air pollution in Paris and Lyon. The State Council announced in Paris on Friday that the limit values for nitrogen dioxide were still being exceeded in both metropolitan areas despite efforts to achieve cleaner air. The measures taken so far have not been sufficient to comply with the limit values in a timely manner.

The ban on polluting cars in Paris has been postponed until 2025, even though the nitrogen dioxide concentration in the capital’s air has been too high for years. In the metropolitan areas of Toulouse and Marseille/Aix, the limit values are now being adhered to, unlike in the past, the State Council also announced. In addition, fine dust limits would no longer be exceeded in any major French city. In France, the Council of State advises the government, but at the same time functions as the highest administrative court and can therefore also impose penalties.
