Blackout. A young woman wakes up in a strange bed. She feels sick. She has no memory of the past few hours. She has no idea how she got to this place. However, one thing is clear: the woman was a victim of knockout drops.

It is cases like these that the Women’s Network3 team is faced with more and more often, as leader Eva Kapsammer said during the campaign “16 days against violence against women and girls” told. The campaign takes place annually between November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and December 10th, the International Human Rights Day. During this period, the topic should become even more central to society. Almost every fifth woman in Austria is affected by physical or sexual violence at least once in her life.

Yesterday, the start of the action days was once again used by the women’s network3 as an opportunity to raise the flag against violence against women together with Rieder’s mayor Bernhard Zwielehner on Ried’s main square, which will fly in front of the town hall during the action days.

Bracelets for the test

This year in the Innviertel the main focus is on the fight against this “rude awakening” in focus. Together with the Soroptimists Ried, the drugstore dm in Weberzeile and the sex educator Kerstin Steiner, the women’s network started an information campaign to protect against co-drops. These are substances that quickly have a strong anesthetic effect and are secretly mixed into drinks or food. “This makes those affected vulnerable to manipulation and defenseless”said Kapsammer yesterday at a press conference at the start of the campaign. The dangerous substances can initially have a euphoric effect and, in higher doses, can ultimately lead to a deep sleep, unconsciousness and death.

“We are confronted with these cases more and more often. The Ko drops are increasingly coming to us in rural regions. There is a great danger, especially when leaving”, warns the Women’s Network3 leader. The number of unreported victims is still high. For this reason, the women’s network3 is now offering free wristbands with which you can use your drink “most common” I can check knockout drops. A “instrument”which should contribute to prevention but also to raising awareness, says Kapsammer.

It’s not just young women and girls who are affected, as the head of the Women’s Network3 emphasizes: “It can also affect older women or men. It is important that you take care of each other in your group of friends, especially when going out. If this happens and a friend suddenly appears very drunk out of nowhere, it is important to secure the drink and alert the rescue or the police.” The substances could only be detected six to twelve hours after ingestion.

Projects planned with students

It is important that society is aware of the issue “Ko drops” to raise even more awareness, explains Christine Berghammer, President of the Soroptimists Ried. “In most cases, there is shame among the victims. This makes it all the more important not to trivialize the topic. The psychosocial effect should not be underestimated”says Berghammer. The Soroptimists are therefore planning workshops and projects with Rieder schools next year in order to raise awareness of the topic and promote prevention in the region and beyond.
